Sound is a wave or vibration that travels through three states of matter; solid, liquid and gas. And of course it is something that can be heard. Sound travels in mechanical waves. A mechanical wave is a disturbance that moves and transports energy from one place to another through a medium. In sound the disturbance is a vibrating object and the medium can be any series of interconnected and interactive particles.
So when you hit a gong there is a movement which causes some vibration in the molecules which in turn causes the other molecules around them to vibrate. The vibrations from one molecule to the other helps sound to travel. In space where there is just a vacuum and no matter, the sound will not travel because there wont be any molecules to vibrate.
Frequency is an important measure of sound. When there are more number of sound waves passing through a fixed place at a given time, it means that the frequencies is high. When the number of waves becomes less, we hear low frequency sound waves.
The human ear is capable of detecting frequencies between 20hz to 20,000hz, any frequency above or below that is inaudible to the human ear. High frequency sound waves will give us a higher pitch. The loudness of sound is measured in volume and to quantify volume, we use decibels.
A pattern of sounds intended to give pleasure to people listening to it is called music. Musical instruments helps us to make music. Music is one of the best forms of sound. When a musician plays a note of a certain pitch, the musical instrument vibrates and produces a pattern of sound waves made up of many different frequencies.
The most noticeable sound wave is called the fundamental, but there are other waves with higher frequencies, called harmonics. A drangyen makes musical sounds when its strings vibrate. If you pluck a drangyen string and watch it closely, you can see it vibrating very quickly. When you play any form of pipe instrument, such as flute, the air inside vibrates in patterns. Sound waves are transmitted through air and you hear them as musical notes.
